Online Restaurant Marketing (Search Local)

Did you know that about 50% of the population has put down the phone book and picked up the Internet to find local businesses?

Did you know that close to 35% of all online search queries are made on a local level?

Did you know that restaurants are near the top of the list of most popular local search categories?

The latest available statistics showed that Yahoo has over 700 queries for the term Dutchess County Restaurants” per month. Though there are no available stats on Google’s search terms it is estimated that they have three times as many. That is approximately 2,800 direct searches for your products in your market each month.

Don’t be fooled by the big guys in the Internet marketing industry with their promises of thousands of targeted hits per month. They boast that they get hundreds of thousands or even millions of hits each month. Keep in mind that their numbers are based on national or even global campaigns. How many of those hits are coming from Dutchess County, NY? Unless they are at or near the very top of your optimal search results one might be curious as to where the traffic is coming from.

I recently came across an online ad that was generated by a well known “pay per click” marketing campaign while on a local, (Dutchess County), website. The ad was for a restaurant and, (at a glance); it was of perfect relevance to the theme of the site on which it was placed. After clicking on the ad I found that the restaurant was located in Dallas, Texas. I’m sure that the owner of that restaurant wouldn’t be pleased to find he is paying to have his ads placed on local sites from across the country. How many of those, “paid for”, clicks will ever generate a new customer?

I’m sure that you would agree that just one hit from a person living within a 15 min drive from your store is worth more than 1000 hits from Texas.

Online restaurant marketing must be focused entirely on your local market in order to effectively generate “quality” internet traffic that converts into new customers. Let’s forget about getting thousands of useless hits on your website and start getting those that have a better chance of increasing your bottom line.

Hotels beef up Internet services.

Even before they arrive, visitors from out of town are full of questions regarding their stay. In search for information about local attractions, directions, ect., they go straight to the front desk, check into the establishment and start asking the employees for the answers.

In a recent conversation with a friend of mine, (who happens to be a hotel manager.), I learned that the most asked question at the hotels front desk is "Where can I find a good restaurant?". He told me that he no longer likes to answer by recommending a local restaurant. There where a few instances when the customer was unhappy with his suggestion, he even had a guy try to pass the diner bill to the hotel.

Here is the answer, send them to the computer.

Some hotels will list a couple of local restaurants on their own sites, but this doesn't solve the problem of unhappy diners. The best way for hotel managers to keep customers happy is to do a few minutes of searching the web themselves. Find the most up to date online local restaurant directory and keep it in your browsers "favorites" or place a link to it on the hotels web site on a page named "Local Resources".

In Dutchess County, N.Y., it is without a doubt, http://DutchessCountyRestaurants

Dutchess County Restaurants - Putting Web Sites to Work

Dutchess County Restaurants are using the Internet to focus locally

The Internet is now becoming a powerhouse in local marketing.

Local businesses are finding the Internet to be a great marketing tool. Many have realized that they can effectively use the web to advertise in their local markets for a fraction of what traditional print ads cost. Most traditional print advertisers are making a huge push to online publishing of their content. (Have you heard about the "Associated Press" and the battle over the Internet?).

As the population matures and the new young adults find themselves making decisions on where to shop, dine and travel, the Internet is one of the first places they look for information.

The idea behind using the Internet on a local level  is not to gauge the results by the amount of web traffic that is coming to you, but rather, where the traffic is coming from.  There are thousands of places to list your ads online and generate a huge number of hits on your web site, a new "Link Farm" is created every couple of minutes. A few hits per day from people that are really looking to dine in your area are worth more than thousands of untargeted clicks. Before you decide to pay for a listing on any web site, it is highly recommended that you take a minute or two and study your options.  Go to your web browser and do a few quick searches as if you are looking for something specific, like a place to dine in Dutchess County, N.Y. Keep the same topic in mind and try a few more search terms that people may use to find your topic. It may surprise you how many times the same web sites show up on the first page of your results. Now you should take a good look at each of these sites and ask yourself questions such as,

  • How current is this site? (Are there listings or ads that are out of date, expired coupons?).
  • Is this site easy to navigate? (How will people find my ad?)
  • What is the focus of this site? (Is it really a "niche" to my market?)

Lets take a look at how the many fine restaurants of Dutchess County, N.Y. can take advantage of this powerful local marketing tool called the "World Wide Web".
